Smell the Fresh Air!
What would we do without air? Air makes it possible for us to live on the planet Earth. Our bodies are designed to breathe in the air, draw the oxygen we need from it, and exhale carbon dioxide--it's an awesome system! The quality of the air we breathe is very important for the health of our bodies and the health of our planet. When we do simple things to make sure we aren't polluting the air, we are loving the Earth.

Did You Know?

  • You breathe approximately 20 times a minute.
  • You breathe in oxygen and exhale carbon dioxide.
  • Each minute you take in 13 pints of air.
  • Your lungs include nearly 1,500 miles of airways!
  • Plants clean up the environment for us by taking in the carbon dioxide we enhale and releasing oxygen. Thanks, plants!

What You Can Do to Love Air

  • Keep track of the air quality in your state. Click here to access the State of the Air 2008, hosted by the American Lung Association.
  • Encourage your parents to drive less and ride bikes more! (Car exhaust adds to the pollution in the air.)
  • Think about how many trips you take in the car and, when you can, do a bunch of errands at once so you don't have to drive as often.
  • Don't leave campfires burning for a long time. Put the fire out completely when you are finished with the campfire so that it doesn't smolder and continue to add smoke to the environment.
  • Plant trees and bushes to help clean the air.
  • Work to keep green places clean and free of litter.
