Sail the Open Ocean
The oceans of the Earth are important because they help provide consistent temperatures for us and contain 97 percent of our water supply. The ocean temperature warms by absorbing the sun's rays and the waves of the ocean help to distribute the heat energy throughout the atmosphere. Plus, how fun would it be to go to the beach and if there wasn't an ocean to swim in? Not very!

Did You Know?

  • Oceans cover almost 70 percent of the Earth's surface
  • Oceans contain 97 percent of all the Earth's water supply
  • All of the Earth's oceans are connected to each other
  • There are five oceans: the Pacific, Atlantic, Indian, Southern, and Arctic
  • A sea is a smaller body of water that might be partly bordered by land. Big seas you may have heard of include the Mediterranean Sea and the Caribbean Sea.

  • Visit a lake, stream, or pond with your parents to find out more about the types of animals that live near water.
  • Clean up any litter you find in or around the water.
